If it’s not obvious by now, I am a geek. I love comic books, Sci-Fi, fantasy and cosplay regularly, me and the roommate at comicons. I’m also a bit of a history nerd, so franchises like Indiana Jones, while wildly inaccurate, are fun for me as well. Therefore, it is distressing to learn that these franchises so dear to my heart (and collection) have creators who are being exploited by Disney. They are not being paid for their creative rights, royalties and Disney is withholding information so that these creators can have their contracts fullfilled per Disney’s acquisition of these franchises.

The franchises in question include Marvel Studios/Comics, LucasFilms (Star Wars, Indiana Jones), 20th Century Fox (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, Aliens, etc). Disney is either reprinting novelizations, comics or putting out the movies they have acquired without properly compensating the creative teams that put them together. A lot of good authors, artists, etc are not getting paid because Disney is refusing to honor the contracts made with these creators. Not everyone can be Stan Lee or George Lucas but if you aren’t a “big name” Disney is refusing to pay you your due.

A hashtag is going out in social media #DisneyMustPay and multiple creators associations have created a task force to try to work with Disney to resolve this issue. So far, Disney is refusing to cooperate.

For more information, please read this press release and note the list of organizations, unions and not-for-profits involved in this important fight for creator rights.
